R o m a ş a  P h o n o l o g y

As a Romance language, Romaşan phonology closely resembles the other Romance languages. Below I will give the IPA charts for consonants and vowels and describe allophones and other linguistics goodies.

Consonants:

Bilabial Labiodental Alveolar Postalveolar Palatal Velar
Stop p b   t d       k g
Fricative   f v s   ʃ ʒ
Affricative
Tap     ɾ
Lateral     l
Nasal m   n

Consonants don't show much in the way of allophonic action. [k] and [g] often become [c] and [ɟ] before front vowels (represented as /ç/ and /gh/, respectively). [n] will often palatize to [nj] before a final [i], yielding [anj] or ['anji] as the plural of ['anu] (year - years). [l] often acts similarly, going to [lj] for final [li].

Vowels:

  Front Central Back
Close i   u
Close-
Mid
e   o
Mid   ə
Open a

All the vowels can be nasalized. Nasalization, in writing, is marked with a following /m/ or /n/ in the final syllable, or a following /m/ or /n/ and then another consonant in a non-final syllable. Remember that '^' marks a double vowel, so only the first one is nasalized if nasalization does occur. Unstressed [e] becomes [ə] in all positions, and is nasalized as it would be expected.

sange ['sã.ʒə] (blood)
sentu ['sẽ.tu] (hundred)
cumprêndrer [kũprəə̃'drer] (to understand)
cantan ['kã.tã] (they sing)
